We caught up with Tom Findlay of Groove Armada to talk music, travel, DJ culture, and Lost in Music Volume 12.

Tell us a little about yourself – who are you, where are you based, and what pays the bills?

I’m Tom Findlay from Groove Armada. I'm a DJ, producer, and music lover. My wife pays most of the bills.

Where did you record this mix, and what inspired it?

I put this mix together on the road, mostly using Ableton Live – apologies to the vinyl purists! It was a chance to capture the underground basement vibe I rarely get to showcase in my usual gigs.

Vinyl, digital, or doesn’t it matter?

Honestly, if it’s good, I'll play it.

The term ‘Balearic’ is everywhere these days – if you had to sum up its essence in one record, what would it be?

"Josephine (La Versione Française)" by Chris Rea. Equally, "After the Love Has Gone" by Earth, Wind & Fire. Yes, I know that's two.

What's your favourite travel destination, and why?

I've been fortunate to travel extensively, making it impossible to pick just one. Tokyo left a lasting impression, LA is strangely lovable despite its faults, and New York is heaven for music lovers - especially A1 Records on East 3rd Street, the best place to buy records, full stop. For holidays, Sri Lanka is ace.

Sunset or sunrise, and where's the best place to enjoy it?

Sunset, always. Cold beer, Ibiza—perfect combination.

What's the most you've spent on a single record, or your greatest bargain find?

I've probably never spent more than £50 on a single record. I’ve always been more passionate about the music than collecting obsessively.

Who are some of your favourite DJs you've heard live?

There are so many great ones. François K is incredible, and you can't beat David Mancuso's selections. Closer to home, Jamie Jones fully deserves the hype, no question.

Anything exciting coming up we should know about?

Just keeping the grooves coming. Here’s the tracklist for the mix:

  • Poluc – Johnny D

  • H4 – M.F.S Observatory

  • Metropole – KiNK, Neville Watson

  • The Basement is Burning – Marquis Hawkes

  • It’s the Inside that Counts – Phil Weeks

  • All You Desire – Chris Carrier

  • Heat – Soul of Hex

  • No I Don’t – Recloose

  • Loving – DJ Nature

Big thanks to Tom for taking time to chat.
